For Women Who Want to Learn to Play Golf

For the Love of Golf

Learning to play golf sounds like fun, doesn’t it? I hear women all the time saying they would love to learn how to play.  As a woman who started learning how to play in my 40’s, I can say that it’s one of the loves of my life.

When I get out on the course, I feel so happy breathing fresh air and being in nature surrounded by beautiful grass, trees, flowers, water, birds, and all other aspects of nature.

I am one of the fortunate women whose husband likes to play with his wife.  Many men have their men groups they play with and a wife is not welcome.  My husband and I like playing golf together.

He is so patient and encouraging when I play bad or hit a bad shot.  He has taught me how to play the game, golf etiquette, course management, and it is pretty cool that he’s also a PGA professional.

Take Lessons

If you have a desire to learn how to play and you don’t have a husband to teach you, I would strongly recommend getting lessons from a PGA professional. Take a few lessons, then go play nine or eighteen holes.

When just starting to learn the golf swing, there is so much to remember and think about that you will not likely be good right off the bat.  It takes a while to develop the muscle memory so that the swing becomes automatic.

Give it time. Practice, practice, practice. Golf is a game that takes time and dedication to be good.  You get out of it what you put in it.

Expect it to take lots of playing time before you really feel like you can play. And remember this, you have to play to get better. Make time for it. Hit the practice range, take more lessons, go play and have fun.

The best advice my husband gave me early on was, “you’re not good enough to get mad.”  I had not put in the time. I was not a seasoned golfer. I needed to just relax and have fun and not expect perfection. It’s much harder than the pros on television make it look. Being athletic, I thought I would pick it up quickly and be great.  HaHa.

Before the Lessons

Golf Clubs

You are probably wondering what type of equipment you need and what you need to wear to your lesson.  As a beginning golfer, you will not need to invest in an expensive set of golf clubs. You can find a good used set of women’s clubs at ebay or Facebook Marketplace.

You will need to have a driver, a hybrid, a 5-iron, a 7-iron, a 9-iron, a pitching wedge, and a putter. You can find a good used set for around $200.  Brand doesn’t matter at this point.  I have owned Tommy Armour, Callaways, Taylor Made, and Adams.

Golf Balls and Tees

You will also need golf balls and tees.  You can buy ladies golf balls which are designed specifically for women.  It’s just a matter of trying different brands to find the one you like best.  It doesn’t matter in the beginning what you choose.

I hate to lose golf balls.  It used to drive me crazy when I couldn’t find my ball. You need to know that everyone loses golf balls and it’s just part of the game and to be expected.  Don’t stress and spend too much time looking for lost balls.  The manufacturers will keep making them.  Just go buy more.

Golf Glove

A golf glove will also be helpful.  If you are a right-handed golfer, you will want a glove to wear on your left hand.  Find one that fits snug.  I like leather gloves.

Golf Attire

Proper golf attire for many golf clubs requires golf pants or shorts, no denim, and a collared shirt for men. Women’s rules differ somewhat, still no denim, but skirts and tops without collars are acceptable, No t-shirts on the course.  Golf shoes, a molded bottom sole shoe, or sneakers are fine.

Being Nervous

You’re going to be nervous if you are like most people before your first lesson. Knowing what to expect will set your mind at ease somewhat. Try to relax in the fact that everyone feels that way. It’s like starting a new job with the first day jitters. Once you get that first lesson behind you, everything will be alright.

Finding Friends

Many golf clubs have a women’s league where you can join and play with other women.  There are also couple’s leagues if you want to meet other people.  Even if you don’t have a partner, there is usually someone to pair with for the round.  These are good ways to meet new friends and have fun.

I hope you find this information helpful.  Remember, never give up.  Stay the course.  Practice. Enjoy learning a new skill. And, by all means, have fun!
